Overview
Modern infectious diseases medicine now focuses not only on acute infections but also on chronic inflammation, immune system disorders and prevention.
When should you see an infectious diseases specialist?
Many infections have similar symptoms, so making an accurate diagnosis takes expertise. See an infectious diseases specialist if you notice any of the following:
- Fever of unknown origin: If a fever persists or keeps coming back, and basic tests have not found the cause.
- Chronic fatigue and swollen lymph nodes: These are often caused by viral infections (such as mononucleosis or Lyme disease).
- Symptoms after a tick bite: Redness, joint pain or neurological symptoms.
- Symptoms after travel: If you develop fever, diarrhoea or rashes after returning from a tropical or exotic country.
- Recurrent infections: If you often have upper respiratory, urinary tract or skin infections, which may point to weakened immune defences.
- Suspected sexually transmitted infection (STI): For a thorough work-up and discreet advice.
The most common diseases treated in infectious diseases
Lyme disease and other zoonoses Early detection of diseases spread by ticks and other animals is key to avoiding long-term complications (joint and nerve damage).
Blood-borne and sexually transmitted infections Screening, diagnosis and care for hepatitis viruses (types B and C), HIV, syphilis and other infections.
Chronic viral infections Treatment of long-lasting symptoms caused, for example, by the herpes virus family or the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
Factors in how infections develop and spread
- A weakened immune system (due to stress or other conditions).
- Environmental factors (insect bites, contaminated water or food).
- Spread in the community (schools, workplaces, travel).
- Inappropriate antibiotic use (development of resistance).
What happens at an infectious diseases appointment
The examination starts with a very thorough medical history: the doctor looks in detail at how your symptoms developed over time, your travel history, eating habits, contact with animals and previous medication.
This is followed by a physical examination, in which the specialist checks your lymph nodes, throat, skin and internal organs.
For an accurate diagnosis, specific laboratory tests are essential:
- Serological tests: Detection of antibodies in the blood.
- Microbiological cultures: From urine, stool or throat swabs.
- Molecular biology tests (PCR): Direct identification of the pathogen’s genetic material.
How should you prepare for the examination?
Please bring all your previous test results and fever diary, and write down exactly which medicines (especially antibiotics) you have taken recently. For your travel history, it helps to list the countries you visited and the vaccinations you received for them.
