About the tests
Molecular microbiology is a leading field of modern laboratory medicine, based on detecting the genetic material of the microorganisms that cause infections. It can test for various bacteria, viruses, fungi and some parasites with high sensitivity and specificity, even where traditional culture methods are limited or take longer.
One of the best-known molecular methods is PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and its variants. These methods detect specific genetic sections of pathogens. Depending on the type of test and the suspected infection, multiplex panels that test for several pathogens at once can also be used.
Different types of sample may be tested, for example blood, urine, respiratory, stool or other clinical samples. The right sample type and test method are always chosen based on the symptoms, the suspected site of infection, the medical history and the clinical indication.
An important advantage of molecular microbiology is fast, targeted detection of pathogens. An accurate result can help clarify the source of an infection, plan further tests and choose the appropriate treatment. Some tests can also give information about certain genetic features of pathogens, for example those linked to antimicrobial resistance.
It is important, however, that we always evaluate molecular test results together with the clinical symptoms and other laboratory results. Detecting a pathogen’s genetic material does not by itself always mean an active infection that needs treatment.
At Sabjanics Medical Center, the aim of molecular microbiology is to support accurate, well-founded medical decisions with modern laboratory methods. Choosing the right tests and evaluating the results expertly means the diagnostic process is always tailored to the patient’s individual condition and clinical question.
