When is a mycology test recommended?
The test is recommended if:
- recurring skin or nail changes appear (peeling, itching, nail discolouration),
- vaginal itching, discharge or burning is present,
- a fungal infection of the mouth, throat or gut is suspected,
- long-term antibiotic or steroid treatment is followed by symptoms,
- immunocompromised patients have symptoms suggesting infection.
How is the test carried out?
The sample is taken from the infected area: this may be a skin sample, nail scraping, hair, vaginal discharge, or a throat or mouth swab.
In the lab the sample is examined under a microscope and then placed on a culture medium to determine exactly
- whether there is a fungal infection,
- which fungal species is responsible (e.g. Candida albicans, Trichophyton rubrum, Aspergillus etc.),
- and which antifungal treatment (antimycotic) is recommended.
Why is a mycology test important?
Fungal infections often heal slowly and only respond to targeted treatment.
The wrong creams or medicines may not only be ineffective but can also mask the symptoms.
Based on the lab result, the doctor can distinguish between superficial (skin, nail, mucous membrane) and deeper, systemic infections, and prescribe the right treatment.
