About this specialty
The success of an ultrasound scan depends largely on the bowel being free of gas and the bladder being full. Please follow the steps below:
- Eating: Before the scan, do not eat for at least 6 hours. Do not have coffee, milk, juices with pulp or fizzy drinks.
- Diet: On the day before, avoid foods that cause wind.
- No chewing gum: Do not chew gum before the scan, as this can make the gallbladder contract and cause you to swallow air, which reduces image quality.
- Fluids and a full bladder: A full bladder is needed to see the pelvic organs. Drink half a litre of still water 2 hours before the scan, and do not empty your bladder until the scan is over.
