Gynaecological examination – what to expect and how to prepare
A gynaecological examination is not only about looking into symptoms, but also about prevention, safety and long-term health.
We welcome you in a calm, attentive setting, and the examination always starts with a conversation.
- A detailed history – getting to know you and your background
During the consultation we talk about:
- the date of your last period and your cycle (how often, how long, how heavy),
- previous pregnancies, births or any miscarriages,
- the contraception or protection you use,
- previous illnesses, operations and allergies,
- medicines you take regularly,
- lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol, weight change),
- and your family medical history.
This part helps make sure the examination provides care tailored to you, personalised to your needs.
- How should you prepare for the examination?
The examination is done with an empty bladder, so please use the toilet before you arrive
(exception: for virgin patients we use a different examination method).
You only need to undress from the waist down, and we can give you a sheet to cover yourself if you wish.
- The gynaecological examination – step by step
- a) External examination
First, the external genitals and surrounding skin are examined. - b) Speculum examination
We use a sterile, single-use plastic instrument so that the cervix can be seen clearly.
At this point we carry out:
- a cervical screening (cytology) sample,
- an HPV test if needed,
- and PCR sampling to detect pathogens (e.g. Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, Trichomonas, Gonorrhoea etc.).
Samples are tested by an accredited laboratory, and results usually arrive within 5–10 working days.
- c) Colposcopy
The surface of the cervix is dabbed with acetic acid and iodine solution, so that any abnormal changes are easier to see.
This examination is painless and takes a few minutes. - d) Manual (bimanual) examination
The specialist feels the position, size and tenderness of the uterus and ovaries. - e) Transvaginal ultrasound
In most cases we recommend an ultrasound of the pelvic organs, as it gives an accurate picture of the uterus, ovaries and surrounding areas. - Talking through your results and next steps
Once you are dressed, we calmly talk through:
- your test results,
- the treatment options you need,
- the recommended lifestyle or preventive steps,
- and the timing of follow-up checks.
Keeping you informed and safe matters most to us.
