Antenatal care

Antenatal care is a complete healthcare service from conception to birth. It includes regular check-ups with a specialist, ultrasound, laboratory tests and lifestyle advice. Its aim is to follow a normal pregnancy, spot any risk factors early, and keep mother and baby safe.

Overview

Throughout, the obstetrician-gynaecologist, the midwife, the health visitor and, when needed, other specialists (e.g. a dietitian or diabetologist) work closely together.

Antenatal care means all the medical and healthcare support given during pregnancy, with the aim of keeping the pregnant woman and the developing baby healthy. It includes regular medical examinations, laboratory tests and ultrasound checks, which help follow the progress of the pregnancy and detect any complications early. Good nutrition, exercise and stress management are also an important part of antenatal care, as is mental and emotional support for the mother-to-be. Doctors and other professionals also give advice on preparing for the birth and on the time after it. The aim is a smooth pregnancy and a healthy baby.

When should you start antenatal care?

Ideally, care begins while you are still planning a pregnancy, but at the latest you should see our specialist after a positive pregnancy test following a missed period.

  • First visit (weeks 6–8): Confirming the pregnancy and checking the position of the embryo and its heartbeat.
  • Genetic screening: Detailed ultrasound scans in week 12 and weeks 18–20 to check the baby’s development and health.
  • Glucose tolerance test (weeks 24–28): To screen for gestational diabetes.
  • Regular check-ups: Monthly as the pregnancy progresses, then weekly in the last month (blood pressure, urine test, weight check).
  • CTG/NST monitoring: From week 36, monitoring the baby’s heartbeat and the activity of the womb.

The key pillars of antenatal care

Fetal diagnostics With our modern, high-resolution ultrasound machines we follow the baby’s growth, the development of the organs and the condition of the placenta.

Laboratory support With regular blood and urine tests we monitor changes in the mother’s body, helping to prevent anaemia, infections and pre-eclampsia (toxaemia of pregnancy).

Lifestyle and nutrition We help expectant mothers with the right vitamin supplements, choosing safe forms of exercise (e.g. pregnancy exercise classes) and planning the best diet during pregnancy.

How antenatal care works

At Sabjanics Medical Center, antenatal care is a personalised journey where you can get answers to all your questions.

  1. Initial assessment: Reviewing your medical history, assessing risk and drawing up a care plan.
  2. Regular visits: Physical examinations, ultrasound checks and ongoing review of your test results.
  3. Screening and tests: In addition to the required tests, we also offer the most modern non-invasive prenatal tests (NIPT), which examine fetal DNA from the mother’s blood.
  4. Emotional support: We prepare you for labour and the first weeks of motherhood, easing any fears that come up.

How to prepare for your appointments

Always bring your pregnancy care record book and all your previous test results. It is a good idea to write down your questions before the appointment, so everything can be covered during the consultation.
