About the tests
Ultrasound diagnostics is one of the most widely used methods in modern medical imaging. It uses high-frequency sound waves to show the body’s organs and tissues in real time. The scan involves no ionising radiation, is usually painless, and in many cases gives the doctor valuable information quickly and gently.
Ultrasound can be used to examine, among other things, the abdominal and pelvic organs, the thyroid, the soft tissues of the neck, the breast, and certain joints and other soft tissues. It can detect some structural changes, inflammation, fluid collections, cysts and other abnormalities. Ultrasound can be used as part of a preventive check-up, to find the cause of existing symptoms, or to follow up previously known findings.
During the scan, the doctor moves an ultrasound probe over the skin of the area being examined, while the machine builds an image of deeper structures from the sound waves that bounce back. In some cases a Doppler ultrasound can also be used, which can give further information about blood flow and circulation in the vessels.
How to prepare for an ultrasound depends on the area being examined. Some scans need you to have an empty stomach, others a full bladder, while many can be done without any special preparation. So it is always worth checking how to prepare beforehand.
An important advantage of ultrasound is that it shows the area being examined in real time, and it can be repeated if needed. However, an ultrasound result must always be assessed together with the patient’s symptoms, medical history and other test results. Where appropriate, the results may lead to further imaging or other diagnostic tests.
At Sabjanics Medical Center, the aim of ultrasound diagnostics is to support an accurate, well-founded medical diagnosis with modern imaging. We place great emphasis on a careful examination, expert assessment of the results, and making sure the diagnostic process always fits the patient’s individual condition and symptoms.
