Internal medicine

Internal medicine is the medical specialty concerned with how the body works as a whole, and with recognising, diagnosing and treating disease of the internal organs – such as the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, the gastrointestinal tract, the endocrine organs and the metabolic system. The internal medicine doctor helps to trace the causes behind complex symptoms, especially when the symptoms affect several organs or a whole system.

Overview

The most common problems in internal medicine include respiratory and circulatory diseases, disturbed function of the digestive system, hormonal abnormalities, metabolic diseases (for example diabetes), and the assessment and care of various chronic conditions – high blood pressure, obesity, thyroid disease and autoimmune conditions.

When is it worth seeing an internal medicine doctor?

An internal medicine examination is important not only when you already have a complaint, but also for a general health check and prevention.
See our internal medicine specialist if you notice the following symptoms:

  • persistent tiredness, weakness,
  • recurrent chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath,
  • frequent headaches, dizziness, fluctuating blood pressure,
  • digestive problems: bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, heartburn,
  • unexplained weight loss or weight gain,
  • increased thirst, passing urine often, suspected diabetes,
  • symptoms that suggest the thyroid: nervousness, disturbed sleep, hot flushes, hair loss,
  • swelling, fluid retention,
  • a cough that goes on, frequent respiratory infections.

An internal medicine assessment is also recommended when you have no symptoms, if:

  • heart disease, diabetes or thyroid disease has occurred in the family,
  • cardiovascular risk is high (smoking, being overweight, a stressful lifestyle),
  • your condition needs to be followed while you take regular medication,
  • you would like a yearly general screening.

In many conditions, early recognition can prevent serious complications from developing.

The most common conditions treated in internal medicine

High blood pressure (hypertension)

Often without symptoms, but over the long term it damages the heart, brain and kidneys. Regular checks and targeted treatment are fundamental to preventing complications.

Diabetes (diabetes mellitus)

A metabolic disease that, with the right treatment and a change in lifestyle, can be kept well under control. The symptoms include tiredness, disturbed vision and increased thirst.

Thyroid diseases

Underactivity or overactivity, nodules, inflammation – each comes with different symptoms, such as weight gain, weight loss, palpitations, nervousness or feeling the cold.

Diseases of the digestive system

Gastritis, reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), liver and gallbladder disease, food intolerances.

Heart and circulatory diseases

Disorders of heart rhythm, heart failure, atherosclerosis, circulatory disorders.

Respiratory diseases

Assessment of asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis and a persistent cough.

Autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases

Which can cause complex symptoms and can also affect several organs.

Possible causes of internal medicine conditions

Often several factors lie behind it, together:

  • a stressful lifestyle, lack of sleep,
  • an unhealthy diet, too much salt and sugar,
  • lack of exercise, obesity,
  • smoking and drinking alcohol,
  • an inherited tendency,
  • hormonal disorders,
  • chronic inflammatory and autoimmune processes.

How an internal medicine examination proceeds

The first step of the examination is a detailed interview: a review of your current complaints, medical history, medicines you take and family history.
This is followed by a full physical examination: blood pressure and pulse measurement, listening to the heart and lungs, abdominal examination and checking for swelling (oedema).

If needed, we carry out:

  • laboratory tests (blood sugar, hormones, liver and kidney function),
  • an ECG to check heart function,
  • an ultrasound examination (abdomen, thyroid if indicated),
  • exercise tests and follow-up tests.

The assessment is quick and gentle, and helps to give an accurate picture of the current state of your body.

How should you prepare for the examination?

  • Bring your earlier test results, your list of medicines and your medical documents.
  • For a laboratory test, you often need to come fasting – we will tell you this beforehand.
  • It is best to arrive in comfortable clothes.
