Diabetology

Diabetology is the specialty that deals with disorders of the body’s carbohydrate metabolism, above all the diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care of diabetes (diabetes mellitus). Because diabetes is so widespread, the specialty’s role is not only to bring blood sugar under control, but also to prevent complications and protect patients’ quality of life.

Overview

The most common conditions include type 1 and type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and the various forms of insulin resistance (IR) and prediabetes.

When should you see a diabetologist?

Diabetes often damages the body silently and painlessly for years, which is why screening is vital. See a specialist if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination: This is how the body tries to get rid of excess sugar.
  • Tiredness, low mood: If the cells do not get energy (sugar), constant exhaustion sets in.
  • Sudden weight change: Unexplained weight loss, or stubborn excess weight that will not shift even with dieting.
  • Slow-healing wounds: High blood sugar impairs circulation and the body’s ability to regenerate.
  • Recurring infections: Frequent fungal infections or skin problems.
  • Worsening eyesight: Fluctuating blood sugar can affect the lens of the eye.

The most common conditions treated in diabetology

Type 2 diabetes Most often develops in adulthood, caused by lifestyle and genetics. It can be kept well under control with the right diet, exercise and, if needed, medication.

Insulin resistance (IR) The “waiting room” of diabetes, when the cells become insensitive to insulin. With early detection and targeted treatment, the process can be reversed.

Gestational (pregnancy) diabetes A rise in blood sugar that develops during pregnancy and needs close monitoring for the health of mother and baby.

Risk factors for diabetes

  • Family history (genetic predisposition).
  • Excess weight, especially around the abdomen.
  • A sedentary lifestyle.
  • A poor diet high in refined carbohydrates.
  • Long-term stress and lack of sleep.

What happens at a diabetology appointment

The examination starts with a detailed consultation: the specialist reviews your medical history, eating habits, physical activity and illnesses that run in your family.

This is followed by a physical examination and analysis of your existing laboratory results (blood sugar, HbA1c, insulin, urine test). If needed, the diabetologist may order further tests (e.g. an oral glucose tolerance test – OGTT) and checks for complications (problems with blood vessels, nerves or eyes).

With us, treatment is a comprehensive plan that is not only about medicines, but also includes:

  1. A personalised diet plan (dietetic advice).
  2. Exercise therapy planning.
  3. Blood sugar monitoring strategy training.

How should you prepare for the examination?

Please bring all your previous laboratory results and, if you have one, your blood sugar diary. If you take any medicines, make a list of their exact names and doses.
